Image Gallery

This is a brief description highlighting some images in one of our collections.

These photographs were all taken by Chichester Photographic Services Ltd, of Whyke Lane, Chichester. West Sussex Record Office acquired about 15,000 mainly glass plate negatives in the mid-1970s, which were produced by the firm in the course of its business between the 1940s and the late 1960s, when its founder and owner, Harry Guermonprez, retired. Only a few negatives of the 1940s survive, and there are also many missing from the 1950s. From 1960, however, the collection is virtually complete. The record office also has the firm's day books, listing virtually every picture its photographers ever took, which means that the negatives can generally be identified and dated. Many are associated with news items reported in the Chichester Observer, which often fill in the background story to a picture, and sometimes identify the key figures in it.
